The lobby of Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall is considered a public space for the city. However, the organization of this space in a monumental performance hall makes it a much more private than public space. This project serves as an intervention to bringing the lobby back to the public.
A public space is defined as a state of spatial, temporal and visual transitions. In transit, one may physically move through a space, such as walking from subway station to city streets, or be static in a cab and have the visual landscape transition without physical effort.
Contours are employed as the design component for their transitional qualities. Their vertical and horizontal displacement allows for spaces and vistas which modify over time with movement. The transitional experience between programmed spaces is determined by the contour’s change and specificity – inviting the user to interact accordingly with each space.
